We’ve posted recently a few times (here, here, and here) about the idea of doing wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 (and we’ve just submitted a grant on this as well).  In those cases the focus is on detecting RNA from the virus and using that to guide community health decisions such as when to end (or restart) shelter-in-place orders.  However, there is also work out there showing that infectious virus is still present in feces and that may last longer than virus deposited on surfaces via the oral pathway.  This review article “The environmental implications of shedding SARS-CoV-2 in human faeces” focuses more on that risk, but also discusses the possibility of environmental surveillance in wastewater.  No Abstract for this one, but worth checking out the article.
