Call for nominations (self ones OK): mSystems special issue – Perspectives by Early-Career Scientists

I am posting this on behalf of mSystems, for which I am a Senior Editor.

ASM’s journal, mSystems®, is planning to publish a new volume of its Early-Career PIs special issue in 2019. As with the last issue, this issue will feature Perspective articles by early-career principal investigators highlighting their innovative research and their views on the future direction of systems microbiology.  We are especially interested in the work of exceptional early-career researchers in the field of systems microbiology as it pertains to cellular systems, metabolomics, genome biology, microbial ecology, extremophile ecology, multi-omic investigations, bioinformatics, statistical modeling, host-microbe interactions, and synthetic biology.  For this special issue, we are defining early-career investigators as colleagues who are at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor (or equivalent) and are within 6 years of their first position as principal investigator.

We are asking the community to consider nominating a colleague to submit a paper to this special issue.   Perspectives should be approximately 1500 words long with a maximum of 15 references. Authors are asked to discuss their own research, as well as the direction they are taking to advance their respective fields. We also encourage speculation on what the next 5 years of innovation could bring to their fields.  Submissions will be through the normal submission and review process, and we guarantee fairness and a quick decision.

To nominate someone, including yourself, please have them send a 300-500 word proposal to Editor in Chief Jack Gilbert at mSystems@asmusa.org by or before October 15th, 2018.  Their letter should include the name of the nominator and the following information:

  • A brief description of the nominees area of research
  • Confirmation of the nominees status as an early-career scientist, i.e., Assistant or Associate Professor (or equivalent) within your first 6 years as PI
  • A short statement summarizing your view of the future of the field and what you anticipate will be the major developments over the next 5 years

Dr. Gilbert will review all cover letters and issue invitations to submit Perspectives.  The submission deadline for Perspectives will be December 15th, 2018.
