Professor Handelsman is the Director of Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID) at University of Wisconsin Madison. She was appointed by President Barack Obama as the Associate Director for Science at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)\, where she led to establish National Microbiome Initiative (NMI).
