Sloan Funded Projects

The Microbiology of the Built Environment program funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation consists of numerous research projects, as well as several larger collaborations.  A brief description of each project is below.  For more information, click on any of the links.

Biology and the Built Environment (BioBE) Center

The Center, located at the University of Oregon will bring together architects, engineers, and biologists to understand the complex interactions between microbial ecology and human health

Microbiome of the Built Environment Data Analysis Core (MoBeDAC)

The data core provides data analysis tools as well as a data archive for projects related to the microbiology of built environment.

Berkeley Indoor Microbial Ecology Research Consortium (BIMERC)

This group is working on the microbial components of indoor air, how microbes are transmitted through the air in built environments, and on new instrumentation for detection of microbes in buildings.

Microbiology of the Built Environment Network (microBEnet)

This project is responsible for fostering communication and collaboration between research groups, as well as conducting outreach to stakeholders and the public.

The Indoor Mycota Barcode of Life (IM-BOL)

This project is focused on the analysis of indoor environment fungal samples, using both traditional and sequence-based methods.  One of the goals is to develop new markers that would allow more precise identification of indoor molds.
