DNA sequencing technology, a key tool in characterizing microbes in the environment, just keeps getting cheaper and easier. Right now there are some really nice technologies out there in machines from Illumina/Solexa, Roche/454 and ABI. And coming on the horizon are some new systems that possibly will be either “better” in some way or allow new assays or techniques. One system generating a lot of buzz is that from Ion Torrent. If you want to know more about it, as well as a new development they have made, check out Matt Herper’s article in Forbes: Ion Torrent Gives Its DNA-Sequencing Box A Boost – Matthew Herper – The Medicine Show – Forbes.
