One of the goals of the microBEnet project is to help get more people who work on a topic related to microbiology of the Built Environment to share more. And one aspect of this our hope that more people will share slides (and audio or video) from presentations they have made.
So – to help in this area we are working on writing up instructions/guides for doing this. What is the best way to share slides? There are many many options including:
- Slideshare
- Authorstream
- Sharing files in Slide Libraries – SharePoint Server – Office.com
- SlideBoom
- authorSTREAM
- Scribd
- Prezi
- Youtube (see this video for instructions)
- Sliderocket suggested by @jvonneumann on twitter
Some reviews
In the end, after playing with many systems I think that the best for our purposes here is Slideshare. So that is what we are currently recommending to people. Slideshare is pretty simple to use – here are some basic instructions:
- Go to https://www.slideshare.net/signup
- Create an account
- Sign in to your account
- Go to http://www.slideshare.net/upload
- Upload a file. Slideshare accepts all sorts of file formats, which is one of the reasons I like it more than other systems.
- For presentations the options include pdf, ppt, pps, pptx, ppsx, pot, potx (Powerpoint); odp (OpenOffice); key, zip (Apple Keynote).
- Note one can also upload Documents (pdf, doc, docx, rtf, xls (MSOffice); odt, ods(OpenOffice); Apple iWork Pages) and videos (mp4, m4v, wmv, mpeg, avi, mov, mpg, mkv, ogg , asf , vob , 3gp, rm, rmvb, flv )
- Enter details for your presentation
- Public or private (public is better – hint hint)
- Title
- Tags
- Description
- Category
- File download
- Add audio (optional)
- One can upload an mp3 file and then synch it with your slides. This is a bit of a pain but it is useful.
- Share the presentation
- Email the link to people (e.g. for slides related to the Indoor Air 2011 meeting or anything related to microBEnet please email links to us at themicrobenet@gmail.com)
- Post to various social networks
- Embed the slideshow in a website like I have done below for a talk I gave at the iEVOBIO meeting last summer.
