As many out there now, I am a bit fascinated by the possibility of studying microbes in space ships. And I guess I got to get my act together because it turns out there are multiple projects out there in this arena. Some of the work on microbes in space ships and the space station and the like has in the past been, well, of dubious scientific merit. But some of what they are discussing in this article sounds reasonable – especially sampling the microbes of astronauts before space travel to know what they have in their systems. And the point about needing to think about what disinfectants to use is also worth pondering. So if you think microbiology of the built environment is all about Earth, well, you are wrong. And this seems like a good way for microbial ecologists and building scientists to get involved in a novel project or two …
