One reason why NASA should care about “microbiology of the built environment” #microBEnet

Ed Yong in his blog discusses a recent article he wrote for Wired UK: The real story about space bacteria | Not Exactly Rocket Science | Discover Magazine.  Some aspects of the story are very interesting.  What I want to call attention to here is that NASA (and other space agencies) should be VERY interested in studies of the microbiology of the built environment, because of course, when you go into space, you spend all your time in a built environment.  It seems there should be more cross talk between NASA and other folks working on the microbial ecology of buildings and other built environments.

  1. I would definitely offer my services for the sampling trip ;-)

    I would also like to go back to the Apollo moonlanding site and take samples…..sterile means something different now to what it did in 1969.
