Job Description

Bioinformatics Scientist – 1079705

The Microbiology Laboratory at the NASA Johnson Space Center is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a bioinformatics research position. The goal of the laboratory is to mitigate microbial risk to crew health, safety, and performance during the human exploration of space. Recently, the laboratory has made significant progress toward the use of nanopore sequencing technology on the International Space Station for microbial assessments and is expanding these capabilities. The desired candidate will lead bioinformatic assessments with nanopore data resulting from flight, analog, and ground 16S rRNA gene sequencing, shotgun metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic investigations. They will have experience using statistical computing languages to manipulate, visualize, and to draw insights from large-scale datasets.


A Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Quantitative and Statistical Genetics, Information/Computer Science, Biostatistics or a related field

Demonstrated proficiency with nanopore data analysis

Formal training and extensive experience with scripting languages (e.g. R, Python, Pearl), Linux, Tuxedo Suite, DSeq2, or equivalent pipelines, and other bioinformatics tools.

Demonstrated research experience and ability to handle and analyze large-scale genomic datasets, including large-scale analysis of next generation sequencing data is required
