The QIIME developers are hosting a full-day workshop about QIIME on August 30th, 2014 immediately following ISME 15. Here’s a link to the registration information. Having taken one of these classes myself, I can highly recommend them.
Just heard about this today, a call for short proposals from young researchers (received PhD in last three years) working on any kind of microbiome research. Proposals are due May 31st 2014. Would be cool to get some folks working on microbiology of the built environment in here.
Just a quick post here highlighting some preliminary research into a light-activated bactericidal surface that also has some effectiveness even in the dark. The surface is silicon coated with methylene blue, crystal violet, and gold nanoparticles. Sadly the article itself is paywalled (here), but here’s a link to a press release from the University where …
Microbiology is on a roll, it’s been an amazing couple decades of discoveries that have transformed our understanding of the roles that microbes play in human health. And this knowledge has pushed its way into popular culture. Every couple of days I see another popular media article about the influence of microbes on something else; …

Just finished reading this review article preprint on PeerJ by Major Ben Kirkup from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Called “Counterinsurgency Doctrine Applied to Infectious Disease” this article reviews the existing literature on the human microbiome, gives some background on military counterinsurgency doctrine, and then applies insights from the latter to the former. …
We have recently just finished updating and revising our (surprisingly popular) list of all the Sloan grants under the Microbiology of the Built Environment Program. Reading through the list of projects gives a good sense of the disparate kinds of research taking place in the field.
Just a quick note that the conference website is now live for the 3rd annual Microbiology of the Built Environment Conference in Boulder, CO on June 4-6 2014. Check it out, and if you’re a Sloan-funded participant in the program you should be able to register.
Great two-part interview with Rich Corsi from UT Austin talking about indoor air quality. If you’re the kind of person who stays in your house because you’re worried about the air quality outside… don’t listen to this interview because then you’ll have nowhere left to hide. First segment (starts at 9 minutes, 40 seconds) Second …
